Total shipments of portland and blended cement in the United States and Puerto Rico in August 2017 were about 9.7 million metric tons (Mt), up by 3.1 percent from shipments in August 2016, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry Survey. The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in August 2017 were Missouri, Texas, California, Florida and Michigan, in descending order, and these accounted for 41 percent of the month’s total sales.
The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio, and Illinois, in descending order) received about 37 percent of the August shipments. Shipments for the year through August were 62.9 Mt, up by 2.2 percent from those during the same period in 2016.
Masonry cement shipments of about 225,000 metric tons (t) in August 2017 were up by 4.2 percent from those in August 2016. The leading masonry-cement-consuming states were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina and Tennessee; these states received 54 percent of the August shipments. Masonry cement shipments for the year through August were 1.64 Mt, up slightly from those of the same period in 2016.
Clinker production totaled 7.1 Mt in August 2017, essentially unchanged from the output in August 2016. The leading clinker-producing states in August were, in descending order, California, Texas, Missouri, Florida and Alabama. Clinker production for the year through August totaled 50.1 Mt, essentially unchanged from that of the same period in 2016.
